BACKGROUND: Goal setting is commonly used for promoting physical activity (PA) among insufficiently active individuals. Previous reviews have analyzed the effects of goal setting on PA, but the purpose of this systematic review was to examine the concurrent effects of goal setting on PA and psychological outcomes in insufficiently active individuals to support interventions aiming to produce sustained PA behavior change. METHODS: In this review (PROSPERO: CRD42021243970), we identified 13 studies with 1208 insufficiently active adults that reported the effects of goal-setting interventions (range 3-24 wk) on both PA and psychological outcomes (eg, self-efficacy, motivation, and affect). We used meta-analysis and narrative synthesis to analyze these effects. RESULTS: All goals used in the included studies were specific goals. Setting specific goals had a large, positive effect on PA (g [standard mean difference] = 1.11 [P < .001]; 95% confidence interval, 0.74-1.47), but only a small, positive effect on the combined psychological outcomes (g [standard mean difference] = 0.25 [P < .001]; 95% CI, 0.10-0.40). Moderator analyses revealed that interventions that did not reward participants had a significantly greater effect on PA than interventions that did provide rewards (g = 1.30 vs 0.60, respectively, P ≤ .003). No other significant moderators were found. CONCLUSION: Our review offers initial insight into the long-term effects of specific goals on PA and psychological outcomes in insufficiently active adults. Further research that examines the PA and psychological effects of goal-setting interventions and investigates a wider range of goal types could develop a stronger evidence base to inform intervention for insufficiently active individuals.

Exploring student motivation to learn is a research area that has rapidly expanded over the past decade, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to influence education. In the field of anatomy, most research about motivation to learn targets medical and other health professional students, but little is known about factors that drive students enrolled in science degrees. The aims of this mixed-methods study were to determine: (1) what motivates undergraduate university science students to learn anatomy, and whether motivation differs between cohorts (second- and third-year) and gender; and (2) the impact of COVID-19 on motivation to learn. Students (n = 171) completed a survey (the Science Motivation Questionnaire II [SMQII] and questions about learning experiences during the pandemic) and a subset (n = 12) participated in focus groups/interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using a combination of parametric and non-parametric statistics, and a general inductive approach was applied to qualitative data. Grade, intrinsic, and career factors were consistently identified as the key components of motivation. No statistically significant differences were found for motivation components between level of study or gender. Students reported that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted motivational components, but it had also fast-tracked the development of online learning, with both positive and negative connotations. Students value traditional in-person lectures but support a blended approach of traditional and online teaching methods for learning anatomy. Educators should utilize these findings when considering how to teach and support science students in ways that embrace motivational components to foster success in those studying anatomy.

Purpose: Patients poststroke utilized the Home Virtual Rehabilitation System (HoVRS) to perform home-based, gamified upper extremity rehabilitation over 12 weeks. Outcomes related to adherence and clinical improvement were collected, and semistructured interviews were conducted to assess intrinsic and extrinsic motivators that impacted engagement with the system. Methods: Subjects performed between 299 and 2020 minutes of self-scheduled, sparsely supervised hand rehabilitation activities in their homes. Results: As a group, the subjects demonstrated statistically significant improvements at the structure/function, activity, and activities of daily living levels of function. Qualitative analysis generated seven themes that both positively and negatively influenced each subject's experience with HoVRS, including challenge as a primary intrinsic motivator and pursuing additional therapy and/or a return to higher functional status as a key extrinsic motivator. Subjects' ratings of the system using the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory before and after treatment were uniformly positive, but interview-based feedback was more balanced between positive and negative.

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is a set of tools used by workers to protect all or part of their body against the potential danger of work accidents in the work area. The use of personal protective equipment is often considered unimportant by workers, especially those working in dangerous and risky areas. The discipline of workers in using personal protective equipment is still low, so the risk of work accidents that can endanger workers is quite large. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between perception, motivation, knowledge and supervision of the behavior of using PPE at PT. Maruki International Indonesia, Tamalanrea District, Makassar City, South Sulawesi Province. This type of research is analytical research with a cross-sectional study approach with a total sample of 41 people. The results showed that there was a relationship between perceptions and the behavior of using PPE (p = .004), there was a relationship between motivation and behavior in using PPE (p = .002), there was no relationship between knowledge and behavior in using PPE (p = .814), there was a relationship between supervision and usage behavior. PPE (p = .008). It is recommended that workers be obedient and disciplined to use PPE (personal protective equipment) according to the regulations and make it a work norm, provide IEC PPE in all work locations, and increase supervision of the use of PPE through improved management.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of a cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) in improving adherence to non-pharmacological secondary prevention in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Method: Retrospective study of patients with ACS referred to CRP in a tertiary hospital from 2018 to 2021. Pre-post differences in adherence to physical activity, Mediterranean diet, smoking, and motivation to change were analyzed. Age, sex, and baseline motivation were analyzed in predicting change in adherence. Results: 418 patients were included. At the end of the CRP, the adherence to the mediterranean diet increased (p < 0.05; d = 0.83), frequency of physical activity increased by 2.16 (p < 0.05), and motivation to change remained constant (p = 0.94). Both women and men improved their adherence to the mediterranean diet. Both sexes performed more physical activity at the end of the CRP (1.89 times more in men and 4 times more in women; p < 0.05). An association was found between initial motivation and greater changes in adherence to the mediterranean diet (p < 0.05). An inversely proportional difference was observed between age and adherence to the mediterranean diet (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The CRP, in our hospital environment, has an effect of improving adherence to the mediterranean diet and physical exercise in patients with ACS. The change in adherence to the diet increases as the motivation to change the baseline increases, and age is inversely related to the change in adherence.


Objetivo: Evaluar la eficacia de un programa de rehabilitación cardiaca (PRC) sobre la mejora de la adherencia a las medidas de prevención secundaria no farmacológicas en pacientes con síndrome coronario agudo (SCA). Método: Estudio retrospectivo con pacientes con SCA derivados a PRC en un hospital terciario de 2018 a 2021. Se analizaron diferencias pre-post de adherencia a actividad física, dieta mediterránea, tabaquismo y motivación al cambio. Se analizaron la edad, el sexo y la motivación basal en la predicción del cambio de adherencia. Resultados: Se incluyeron 418 pacientes. Al final del PRC aumentó la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea (p < 0.05; d = 0.83), la frecuencia de actividad física aumentó 2,16 (p < 0.05) y la motivación al cambio se mantuvo constante (p = 0.94). Tanto las mujeres como los hombres mejoraron la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea. Ambos sexos realizaron más ejercicio físico al final del PRC (1.89 veces más los hombres y 4 las mujeres; p < 0.05). Se encontró una asociación entre motivación inicial y mayores cambios en la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea (p < 0.05). Se observó una diferencia inversamente proporcional entre la edad y la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea (p < 0.05). Conclusiones: El PRC, en nuestro medio hospitalario, mejora la adherencia a la dieta mediterránea y al ejercicio físico en los pacientes con SCA. La adherencia a la dieta mediterránea aumenta a medida que lo hace la motivación al cambio basal, mientras que la edad está inversamente relacionada con el cambio de adherencia.

LAY ABSTRACT: Autistic youth participate less in physical education classes and organised sport than their neurotypical peers. We conducted a review of existing studies to investigate what is known about what motivates (and does not motivate) autistic youth to take part in structured physical activities. We systematically searched electronic databases and found 18 publications that met the criteria to be included in this review. Data from these studies were extracted and mapped to the self-determination theory to identify factors that support (or undermine) motivation for autistic youth. We also discussed the findings with autistic individuals and other relevant stakeholders to discover how the review related to their experiences. Our results found competence (youth feeling competent in their athletic and social skills and abilities) to be the most reported psychological need impacting motivation for autistic youth. Intrinsic motivation (participating for enjoyment and satisfaction) was the most common facilitator of motivation. Autism-specific themes outside of the self-determination theory were mapped inductively, and we found that the sensory environment was a prominent theme reported to influence the motivation of autistic youth not covered by the self-determination theory. The findings of this review suggest that supporting the psychological needs of autistic youth can foster motivation to engage in physical activity, although how these needs are met can differ from their neurotypical peers. Future research should examine motivational factors that support engagement in structured physical activities through the lens of autistic youth and their experiences.

This study investigates the personality traits and motivations of collaborationists with Russian invaders in Ukraine. A focus group of individuals who knew collaborationists personally identified 14 collaborationism motives (CMs), which were used to interview 104 probation clients convicted of collaborationism. The study utilized the five-factor model developed by Costa and McCrae to evaluate individual characteristics. Categorical principal component analysis (CATPCA) reduced the 14 CMs to three dimensions: pragmatism, adaptation, and fear. The study found that individual factors promoting collaborationism included pragmatism, ideological adaptation to changing realities, and fear stemming from threats to the life and health of an individual and/or their relatives. The study provides insights into the psychology of collaborationism, which can be useful in designing resocialization programs during the probation period of collaborationists.

Objective: To explore the relationships among motivation, professional identity, and innovative ability of nursing intern students. Background: Professional identity and innovative ability are important for nursing students' core competitiveness and care quality. During the internship, nursing students integrate theoretical knowledge and practice, and have a rapid growth. Motivation is positively associated with professional identity and innovative ability. However, there are limited studies examining the professional identity, motivation, and innovative ability of nursing intern students. Design: A descriptive cross-sectional online study. Methods: Students in the nursing schools in southwest and central of China were included in this study and conducted from June to July 2022. A total of 474 nursing intern students were recruited from 16 nursing schools. Research data were collected with "Participants' Demographics Form", "the Professional Identity Questionnaire for Nursing Students", "the Revised Life Goals Questionnaire", and "the Revised Multidimensional Innovative Questionnaire". Independent-sample t-tests, one-way analysis of variance, correlation coefficients, and structural equation modeling were used in data analysis. This study adhered to the STROBE guidelines. Results: A significantly positive correlation was determined among the professional identity (67.55 ± 8.42), motivation (53.38 ± 5.54), and innovative ability (47.99 ± 5.46) of nursing students (r > 0.4, P < 0.001). Motivation had a mediating effect on professional identity and innovative ability (P = 0.003), accounting for 10.9% (0.075/0.689) of the total effect. Conclusions: There was a positive correlation among professional identity, motivation, and innovative ability. Developing motivation and professional identity can enhance nursing intern students' ability to innovate.

Examining the spectrum of vaccine attitudes within the general public, spanning from hesitancy to confidence, is pivotal in addressing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite widespread campaigns advocating for vaccine uptake, a proportion of the population harbour reservations about the safety and efficacy of vaccines. This study seeks to explore the determinants of vaccine attitudes in Canada, leveraging key concepts from the well-established Self-Determination Theory (SDT), including basic psychological needs and the quality of an individual's motivation. During a crucial juncture in the COVID-19 pandemic (December 2021), 292 participants were recruited and completed an online survey assessing levels of satisfaction/frustration of basic psychological needs (sense of autonomy, relatedness, and competence), vaccine attitudes (confidence and hesitancy), and motivation towards vaccination (controlled and autonomous). Two mediation models were employed to examine whether autonomous-controlled motivation mediated the relationship between need satisfaction-frustration and vaccine attitudes. Model 1 revealed a full mediating effect, indicating that need satisfaction influenced vaccine confidence only through autonomous motivation (ab1 = 0.09, SE = 0.04, z = 2.19, 95 % CI [0.01, 0.18]). Meanwhile, Model 2 demonstrated that need frustration was associated with vaccine hesitancy partially through controlled motivation (ab2 = 0.05, SE = 0.02, z = 2.54, 95 % CI [0.02, 0.10]). These findings underscore the applicability of SDT in investigating the motivational mechanisms that shape vaccine attitudes. Recognizing psychosocial factors, including the balance of basic needs and quality of motivations, may be integral to informing effective public health strategies.

Background: Stress and mental health difficulties are common burdens on college students. College counseling centers have been overrun by demand. Thus, self-help interventions may offer a promising alternative to traditional college counseling services. Methods: The current study examined the influence of perceived stress, motivation to change, and self-efficacy beliefs on college students' use of self-help resources, to determine whether these factors would predict follow-up with self-help recommendations. Results: Results of stepwise linear regression models suggest that perceived stress and self-efficacy did not predict self-help resource utilization. Different types of self-help recommendations did not predict different levels of follow-up. However, motivation to change was a significant predictor college students' self-help resource use, and this variable was particularly important when self-help recommendations were less structured. Conclusions: These findings can help to predict which college students are likely to make use of self-help resources, and inform targeted individual treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is theorized to be reinforced by its emotional consequences. Mental images of NSSI are commonly reported as occurring prior to NSSI. Based on the known functional properties of anticipatory mental imagery as an emotional and motivational amplifier, this study investigated whether NSSI mental imagery constitutes a proximal and dynamic mechanism underpinning NSSI risk. METHOD: An intensive ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study was conducted to track the occurrence and characteristics of NSSI mental imagery alongside NSSI urge and behavior in naturalistic settings. A sample of N = 43 individuals aged 17 to 24 with a history of repetitive NSSI completed EMA surveys seven times a day for 14 days. RESULTS: Mental preoccupation in the form of NSSI mental imagery-based flash-forwards to the actions, bodily sensations, and emotional benefits of NSSI was found to occur when NSSI urge was high but not when urge was low. Critically, objective cross-panel analyses showed that higher frequencies of NSSI imagery occurrence predicted greater future NSSI urge and increased likelihood of acting on urge, over and above current urge. CONCLUSIONS: Mental imagery of NSSI is not simply an epiphenomenal by-product of NSSI urge and may constitute a dynamic and proximal novel intervention target.

Sport commitment describes a psychological attachment to a sport that influences one's desire or resolve to continue involvement in it. Studying antecedents believed to influence long term commitment to sport among athletes with a disability will help ensure that participants gain those psychosocial and health outcomes from sport participation that benefit quality of life. Our purposes in this study were: (i) to examine the Sport Commitment Model (SCM) in terms of the magnitude of the contribution of antecedent factors (i.e., enjoyment, personal investment, involvement opportunities, social constraints, involvement alternatives) to sport commitment of athletes with disabilities; and (ii) to examine the model structure (i.e., original SCM, mediation, and direct/indirect model) that best reflects an understanding of the sport commitment antecedents for these athletes. A total of 157 adult athletes (M age = 34.87, SD = 11.78) with physical disabilities from both team and individual sports across the United States, Europe, and Asia completed the Sport Commitment Questionnaire. Data analyses indicated that sport involvement opportunities, followed by personal investment, were the strongest predictors of these athletes' sport commitments (R2 = .66). Based on the principle of parsimony, the original structural equation model (χ2 (215) = 384.95; RMSEA = .07; CFI = .95; SRMR = .06) was deemed better for understanding the mechanism of sport commitment than the mediation or direct/indirect models. We address implications of applying the SCM to athletes with disabilities, and we offer suggestions for future research.

Overconfidence, a widely observed cognitive bias, has been linked to increased gambling motivations and behaviors. However, previous studies have largely overlooked overconfidence under a social comparison context, known as overplacement, i.e., the tendency of individuals to believe that they are better than their similar peers. In the present study, we tested the effect of overplacement on gambling motivations and behaviors though a Pilot Survey of Chinese college students (N = 129) and a Field Survey of Chinese Macao casino gamblers (N = 733). Our results revealed a double-edged sword effect of overplacement: Serving as a risk factor, evaluating one self's earning ability as higher than others was linked to more gambling motivations (ß = 0.18, p = .005) and frequency (ß = 0.18, p = .004); Serving as a protective factor, evaluating oneself as happier than others was linked to less gambling motivations (ß = - 0.32, p < .001) and problem behaviors (ß = - 0.26, p < .001). These findings expand the relationship between overconfidence and gambling from a cognitive bias perspective to a social comparison perspective. Our study not only revealed a typical profile of gambling motivations and behaviors among different demographic groups in Chinese casino gamblers, but also highlighted the importance of considering social factors in the study of the psychological mechanisms of gambling.

Understanding the factors that influence people's decisions regarding vaccination is essential to promote vaccination. We aimed to clarify the motivations for receiving booster vaccines. We conducted a paper-based questionnaire distributed during January-February 2022 involving students and faculty staff who received the first COVID-19 vaccination at the mass vaccination program during June-September 2021 at Keio University. A total of 1725 participants were enrolled, and all completed the survey. Among these, 64.9% reported a significant adverse event (AEs) affecting daily life after the second vaccine. "Fear of severe COVID-19 illness" (72.6%) was the most common reason for getting vaccinated, followed by "concern of infecting others" (68.4%) and "fear of COVID-19 infection itself" (68.3%). Television emerged as the most influential source of information (80%), followed by university information (50.2%) and social networking sites (42.8%). Multivariate analysis revealed "fear of severe COVID-19 illness", "fear of COVID-19 infection itself", and "trust in the efficacy and safety of the vaccines in general" were significantly correlated with willingness to receive paid vaccinations. The severity of AEs and source of information were not related to participants' willingness to receive booster vaccinations. Participants with positive reasons for vaccination were more likely to accept a third dose.

Background: COVID-19 has brought many hurdles, and people have had to adjust to new ways. The online class was one such adjustment. Students in health science and engineering streams have more practical learning than theory. The online classes halted the normal teaching-learning processes and brought in unique set of difficulties which was a challenge to both the teacher and the student. Purpose: This study was undertaken to understand the effect of online learning on achievement motivation among health sciences and engineering students during the COVID-19 pandemic and to find out if there is a significant difference across gender, age, type of internet connectivity, and rural/urban areas. Methods: This was a survey-based comparative study. The sample size was 440 and consisted of health science and engineering undergraduate college students, both male and female, in the age group of 17-24 years. Data were collected through the Achievement Motivation Scale given online. A descriptive, z-test, and ANOVA were used to analyze the data. Results: The average need for motivation was shown by 50% of engineering students and 54.55% of health science students. High motivation was shown by only 1.36% of engineering students and 0% of health science students. Females showed better achievement motivation than males, and those having good connectivity and staying in urban areas showed higher achievement motivation. Conclusion: Lockdowns cannot be predicted, but the government needs to be effective in its planning for the rural population with regards to internet connectivity. Policymakers concerned with education should come up with modified teaching strategies for better student engagement. Even during regular off-line teaching, one day a week should be devoted to online classes so that this becomes part of the regular curriculum.

The article considers the problem of organizing prevention and treatment of HIV-infection in suspected, accused and convicted persons in places of deprivation of liberty. The HIV-infected individuals in places of deprivation of liberty are in situation of increased risk that creates objective necessity for in-depth study of this phenomenon. The purpose of the study was to determine specific characteristics of organization of support of HIV-infected individuals, to identify ways of contamination and its main risk factors among both suspected, accused and convicted persons and penitentiary institution personnel. The study provided sorting out of main aspects that resulting in convicts' refusal to receive drugs and treatment. The corresponding recommendations for optimizing general and particular prevention of these negative phenomena were developed. The conclusion was made that it is possible to apply complex methods to motivate convicted HIV patients for treatment. Some of these methods can include such medical social psychological measures of organizational managerial character as training of specialists; participation of HIV patients in comprehensive preventive programs; group support of convicted HIV patients; positive reinforcement application; individual approach.

Most studies of adolescent and adult behavior involved one age group of each, whereas the dynamic changes in brain development suggest that there may be behavioral flux in adolescence. In two studies, we investigated developmental changes in social reward motivation in female and male Long-Evans rats from prepuberty to early adulthood in a social operant conditioning task. Given the earlier onset of puberty in females than in males, we predicted the course of social reward development would differ between the sexes. Overall, the pattern of results from both studies suggests that the trajectory of social motivation across adolescence is characterized by upward and downward shifts that do not depend on the sex of the rats. During training, in both studies, the mean number of social gate openings and percentage of social gate openings was higher at P30 (prepubertal, early adolescence) and P50 (late adolescence) than at P40 (mid adolescence) and P70 (adulthood) irrespective of sex. Nevertheless, the specific age comparisons that were significant depended on the study. In both studies, P30 rats had greater levels of social motivation than did adults in accessing a social reward when increased effort was required (progressive ratio tests). In an extinction test, only P30 and P50 rats continued to show more nose-pokes at the previously social gate than at the nonsocial gate, suggesting resistance to extinction. The results highlight the importance of characterizing behavior at several timepoints in adolescence to understand the neural mechanisms, many of which show similar discontinuities as they develop across adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) demonstrate poorer performance in locomotor and ball skills than children with typical development. During motor assessment, keeping children's attention and motivation is challenging, especially for children with DS, which may affect the test outcomes. This study aimed first to examine the impact of examiner and App-animation demonstrations during the assessment on the performance of fundamental motor skills, focus of attention and intrinsic motivation for children with DS and neurotypical development (NTD). The secondary aim was to examine the differences in those outcomes between children with DS and neurotypical development. METHODS: A sample of 24 children (10 with DS and 14 with NTD) aged between 3 and 10 years were subjected to two motor performance assessment protocols: a traditional protocol using the Gross Motor Development Test-3 (TGMD-3) and a protocol using animations from an application as support for TGMD-3 (AppP). The focus of attention was obtained from video recordings during protocol instruction (number of eye shifts, eye shift time, instruction focus time, number of instructions required and total instruction time). Intrinsic motivation was assessed by the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) at the end of each protocol. RESULTS: The results showed no significant differences between the protocols for locomotor skills, ball skills and gross motor index. However, children with NTD outperformed those with DS in these skills. When analysing the focus of attention, children with DS showed greater ocular deviations and longer instruction time requested in the traditional protocol compared with AppP, even when compared with NDT children. When comparing protocols in both groups, AppP demonstrated fewer ocular deviations and shorter ocular deviation times. Regarding intrinsic motivation, children with DS in the traditional protocol had lower motivation scores than those with NTD. Regarding the purchase of protocols, in both groups, the AppP presented higher scores for interest/pleasure, perceived competence and general motivation, with lower pressure/tension. CONCLUSION: The animated application (AppP) proved effective as a visual support during the TGMD-3 assessment, particularly benefiting children with DS by enhancing motivation and attention.

Substance misuse is a pernicious health concern for many unhoused people. A deep understanding of turning points - what propels someone to take concrete action toward addressing substance misuse - is needed to inform recovery policies and practices. This study sought to identify common elements in turning points among unhoused people vis-à-vis a phenomenological qualitative approach. Twenty people (Mage = 47.47, SD = 9.75; 50% female) who self-identified as being in recovery while unhoused participated in semi-structured interviews in Anchorage, Alaska, a community with high rates of both houselessness and substance misuse. Survival (life- and health-sustaining), individual (intrapersonal), and relational (interpersonal) motivations all shaped turning points. Limitations include the possible underrepresentation of individuals using a harm-reduction approach or capturing differences by housing type. Programs to address substance misuse should consider these motivations. Future research should identify and refine turning points and work to understand how they interact with change processes.

The literature has demonstrated the potential for detecting accurate electrical signals that correspond to the will or intention to move, as well as decoding the thoughts of individuals who imagine houses, faces or objects. This investigation examines the presence of precise neural markers of imagined motivational states through the combining of electrophysiological and neuroimaging methods. 20 participants were instructed to vividly imagine the desire to move, listen to music or engage in social activities. Their EEG was recorded from 128 scalp sites and analysed using individual standardized Low-Resolution Brain Electromagnetic Tomographies (LORETAs) in the N400 time window (400-600 ms). The activation of 1056 voxels was examined in relation to the 3 motivational states. The most active dipoles were grouped in eight regions of interest (ROI), including Occipital, Temporal, Fusiform, Premotor, Frontal, OBF/IF, Parietal, and Limbic areas. The statistical analysis revealed that all motivational imaginary states engaged the right hemisphere more than the left hemisphere. Distinct markers were identified for the three motivational states. Specifically, the right temporal area was more relevant for "Social Play", the orbitofrontal/inferior frontal cortex for listening to music, and the left premotor cortex for the "Movement" desire. This outcome is encouraging in terms of the potential use of neural indicators in the realm of brain-computer interface, for interpreting the thoughts and desires of individuals with locked-in syndrome.
